Sugar and Spice and Everything Nice?

How do you get your readers to actually read what you’ve written? A tasteless boring, bland copy is most likely to be forgotten and what’s worse, it could just not be read! So what do you do to spice up your copy? Here’s how:

Make your headline super interesting: if you can put imagery, metaphors (that are relevant) and most importantly, make it easy to grasp, DO IT! Nothing makes a potential reader read than an exciting super interesting headline.

Facts and anecdotes: be as dramatic as possible without exaggerating when presenting facts. A sentence like: “the geo department saw a 5% raise in the water level thanks to the rain” will get more people to read what you have to say rather than: ‘it rained a lot this year’

Don’t write a novel: make your work easy to read and remember by making it visually appealing. Don’t write an unending essay that is crammed and confusing. Put in bullet points, write short paragraphs and most importantly, make sure your sentences are short and sweet.

To finish off, read what you’ve written and ask yourself honestly if you would have read it had it been written by someone else. Then check if you’ve answered every question that has been asked and finally, make sure your last paragraph is connected to the title and the first paragraph.

Finishing off your article is like sprinkling the completed dish with the garnish. A little sweet and a little spice, that’s what the best dishes are made of.
